Historical Context
Surah Al-Munafiqoon was revealed during the Madinan period, specifically around the time of the Banu Mustaliq expedition. During this period, the Muslim community in Medina was growing in number and influence, but it was also dealing with internal challenges, including the presence of sincere believers, non-Muslims, and a new category: the hypocrites (munafiqoon). These were individuals who outwardly declared faith in Islam but secretly allied with the enemies of the Muslims or worked against the unity of the Muslim community.
One of the key incidents that led to the revelation of this surah occurred during the campaign of Banu Mustaliq. A dispute broke out between a man from the Muhajirun (emigrants from Makkah) and a man from the Ansar (natives of Medina) over access to a water well. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the leader of the hypocrites, sided with the Ansar and stirred division by claiming that the dignified people of Medina (the Ansar) would soon drive out the weaker people—the Muhajirun—once they returned to the city.
When this statement reached the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), he summoned Abdullah ibn Ubayy, but he denied making such a comment. The first eight verses of the surah were then revealed, exposing his lies. Despite being shown as a liar, Abdullah ibn Ubayy refused to apologize to the Prophet because of his arrogance [1,2].

Verse 1:
"When the hypocrites come to you ˹O Prophet˺, they say, “We bear witness that you are certainly the Messenger of Allah”—and surely Allah knows that you are His Messenger—but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars."
This verse exposes the hypocrisy of those who make false declarations of faith. -
Verse 4:
"When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their ˹impressive˺ speech. But they are ˹just˺ like ˹worthless˺ planks of wood leaned ˹against a wall˺. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺?"
A vivid picture of the hypocrites’ deceptive behavior and inner fear. -
Verse 8:
"They say, “If we return to Medina, the honourable will definitely expel the inferior.” But all honour and power belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know."
This records the arrogant and harmful words of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. -
Verse 9:
"O believers! Do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. For whoever does so, it is they who are the ˹true˺ losers."
A strong warning to the believers not to let worldly attachments take them away from faith. -
Verses 10-11:
"And donate from what We have provided for you before death comes to one of you, and you cry, “My Lord! If only You delayed me for a short while, I would give in charity and be one of the righteous.” But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do."
A call to give in charity before it's too late.
