The big bang theory is the idea that all matter in the universe was once compressed into an infinitesimally small point and then exploded outward, causing the matter to expand to create the universe as we know it today.
The Big Bang Theory in the Qur'an
The first physicist who theorized the big bang was Georges Lemaître, who published his paper in 1927. He thought this because he believed that all matter in space was expanding outward from a single point, and he also thought that it would eventually stop expanding and start contracting back into itself again. His theory gained popularity among other physicists, but it wasn’t until Edwin Hubble discovered in 1929 that our galaxy is actually moving away from us that people started to take it seriously as an explanation for how our universe began.
Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?
Qur'an 21:30
When this verse was first revealed, Allah clearly was not targeting the bedouins (arabs of the desert) who had no education in any shape or form, this verse was meant for learned people from our times. Look how God is directly talking to the people who refuse to believe in the Creator despite having so much knowledge of the creation itself.
Expansion of the Universe in the Qur'an
The expansion of the universe is a phenomenon in which all objects in the universe are getting farther and farther apart from each other.
This phenomenon is caused by an acceleration of space itself. The rate at which this acceleration occurs is known as Hubble’s constant, and it can be expressed as H0 = 71 km/s/Mpc (where Mpc stands for megaparsec).
The expansion of the universe can be calculated by measuring how fast galaxies are moving away from one another. This method relies on measurements of redshift, or how much the light from distant galaxies has been shifted toward redder wavelengths due to the Doppler effect.
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍۢ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ We built the universe with ˹great˺ might, and We are certainly expanding ˹it˺.
Qur'an 51:47
The Arabic phrase لَمُوسِعُونَ إِنَّا (lamu:siu:n) means we are expanding it; the word مُوسِعُونَ (mu: siu:n)is derived from the verb أَوْسَعَ (awsae = to expand). The letter “Lam” (l) at the beginning of this word is used to emphasize the noun or the adjective it precedes and it means a lot or very much. Accordingly, this phrase means:“We are expanding the universe a lot.”
The Divine Word
Allah has once again shown us that the Quran is his divine word. Who could have otherwise known these cosmological facts that were revealed 1400 years ago other than the Creator of the universe himself?
We will show them Our signs in the universe and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that this ˹Quran˺ is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is a Witness over all things?
Qur'an 41:53
